Lisa Aguilera joins strong women’s steeplechase field at Pre-Jerome

The women’s 3000m steeplechase at the UBC Pre-Jerome Classic is shaping up to be the fastest ladies steeplechase in the country this year. Lisa Aguilera of Phoenix, AZ has been added to a field that already includes Speed River TFC runners: Dana Buchanan, Genevieve Lalonde and Lydia Willemse.

Aguilera set an American record of 9:28.75 in 2007 when she placed 4th at the KBC Night of Athletics meet in Belgium. She holds a swift personal-best time of 9:24.84 (2010).

Buchanan and Lalonde have both previously dipped under the ten-minute barrier and will ensure a competitive race.  The Canadian record of 9:51.10-set by Carol Henry in 2001- could be under threat.

UBC commit Adrianne Erdman will also be in the field and will be looking to qualify for the IAAF World Junior Championships. The Calgary-native will be hoping to run under the World Juniors standard of 11 minutes flat. So far this year, Erdman has run 11:12.45 at the UCSD Triton Invitational in San Diego on April 28. She will be joined by her future teammates at UBC, Micha Gutmanis- an NAIA steeplechase finalist - and the fast progressing Jenny McCormack.

This race will be one of the best races in the evening to watch as the women could very well take down the meet record of 9:55.25 set by Lennie Waite. It is scheduled to get underway at 7:35pm.
